We have spent many years working on swimming pools and spas and over time, we have learned why these cracks occur and what it takes to make the correct, necessary crack repairs.
Hot tub, spa, water feature and pool crack repairs are common in San Diego and pool surface cracks can occur due to multiple issues and here are a few reasons why. One reason is that we have ground movement due to the ground shifting/earthquakes, soil saturation issues, and gravity pulling on the pool causing spa and pool surface cracking. There is also the possibility that the structural materials failed or inferior workmanship was performed. This is not as likely but if you have a crack in your pool, hot tub, spa, or water feature, it is always best to get it repaired as soon as able.
If you have a crack in your pool or spa surfaces, it is important to fix as soon as able to avoid water loss and water getting down to the structure of the pool or spa. When this happens, you will encounter further damage with things like pool rust repairs and saturating the soil that may cause further instability to the pool, hot tub, spa, or water feature.
Pool Cracks In San Diego And What Is Needed To Repair Them
Pool structure Repairs come in many forms. Has the surface cracked due to failure of the materials or has it separated from the shell of the pool? Or, is the pool surface crack all the way down to the pools structure? These are the things that need to be determined to resolve the problem correctly.
When the surface material such as pool plaster or a pebble pool finish cracks, we would need to remove the area that was damaged to determine if the structure was compromised. If the structure was not damaged, we will only need to repair the surface material. If it is a pool plaster crack, we would need to expose a section that will allow us to mix a plaster patch and then prep the area and install new color matched plaster in that area. This is the same with a pebble pool crack repair as we would need to expose the surface crack and mix a pebble patch that matches to prevent a color difference as much as able.
Matching pool plaster and pebble pool finishes will sometimes vary based on the overall condition of the existing surface material. If the existing surface has any discoloration or staining it may offset the look of the new hot tub, spa, water feature, or pool surface crack.
When It Is A Pool Structural Crack What Is Needed
When it is a structural crack that has also damaged the pool plaster or pebble pool finish, there is more work needed to get things repaired correctly. With all structural cracks, we need to remove a portion of the surface material to expose the more serious crack. Once the area is exposed, we can examine for any pool structural cracking and perform the necessary repairs to make sure the pool is structurally sound. Once this is completed, we will then re-install the surface material. Sometimes this can be done by using an epoxy injection but if it is a decent sized pool crack, we would need to use structural staples. These structural staples hold the two sides of a crack together reducing the possibility of that same crack recurring as much as possible based on each specific pool, hot tub, spa, or water feature.
