Issues With Pool Tile In San Diego
Missing Pool Tiles
Missing pool tiles are a very common problem in San Diego County. As swimming pools, hot tubs, spas, and water features age, they often have material failures or suffer from movement. This would be due to bad materials that broke down causing the tiles to fall off. Bad workmanship is when the pool tile installer lacks in his due diligence when mixing and applying the thin-set properly or grouting with poorly mixed grout. Pool tiles will also pop off when there is an underlying issue with the structure where the tile is mounted. This problem is called a bond beam crack which often occurs from ground movement. The bond beam is the cementitious based material that we set the tiles on that is a part of the swimming pools structure.
Hollow Pool Tiles
Hollow pool tiles are very similar to missing pool tile. Hollow pool tile though has yet to fall off due to the grouting materials are still partially holding the pool tiles in place. Hollow pool tiles are sometimes due to calcium building up behind the tiles. This causes them to separate from the bond beam but has not created enough pressure to dislodge them from the grout. When this happens, it may allow more water to get behind the tile causing the problem to get worse as the grout cracks and lets water seep behind the tile. In turn, this causes more calcium buildup and over time, the tiles will pop off causing the grout that was holding them together to fail.
Cracked Pool Tiles
Needing to perform pool tile repairs due to cracked pool tile is also very common. Cracked pool tiles are usually due to a structural crack that is behind the cracked pool tiles. This is indicating that the pool tiles are secured very well but the bond beam has cracked. When the bond moves or cracks it forces the weaker pool tiles to fail and over time crack. Unfortunately, this results in the need for a pool tile repair and more so, the need to see where it is cracking and why. This type of problem requires the need to repair the pool tile along with repairing the structural crack. By doing this, it ensures the tiles do not have another problem in the near future. The only other reason that your pool tiles are cracking is due to age and the elements. Over time the glaze on most pool tile fails. Sometimes the cracks are superficial and sometimes they crack all the way through.
